Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have super powers? To be able to run fast, fly high, see through walls? To protect the weak and save the innocent? To make the world a better place? If you were given the choice of having the ability to speak and understand any language, the ability to travel through time or the ability to make any two people agree with each other, which would you choose?
While the amateur historian in me would love to be able to travel through time, I’m afraid that I would get lost there. I’d have too many times and places to investigate, both in the past and in the future. I would only do it if I had a guarantee that I could just be an observer, and not have the ability to influence anything or anyone. No mucking about with the timeline for me. No way! That holds too much responsibility. So I don’t know if it would be so much a super power as it would be the ultimate form of web surfing.
Would I like the ability to make two people agree with each other? No, I don’t think so. The best ideas in the world come when people disagree and can voice their ideas openly. Nor would I feel comfortable forcing any idea on anyone.
The super power I would love to have is the ability to speak and understand every language. Bring on that Babel Fish. (Any Douglas Adams fans out there?) If I could spend my life talking with everyone, I could do so much to help bring understanding and compassion to the world. I wouldn’t want to be just a translator, but someone who would also understand the culture of the society, their values and history, so that I can bring people together. I could show them what they have in common and help them find a way to trust and work together. That would be an ideal lifetime for me. Where can I sign up for that job?
Now it’s your turn? What would your super power be?
