I know I’m due to give you another installment of “Quiet Influence“, but the latest edition of Brain Pickings arrived in my inbox this morning and I would like to share it with you.
Brain Pickings is the creation of Maria Popova, who describes herself as “a reader, writer, interestingness hunter-gatherer, and curious mind at large” . Once a week she releases another edition of a newsletter that is hard to categorize. I know, because I’ve been having trouble trying to explain it to you. Here’s how she sees it:
“Brain Pickings is a cross-disciplinary LEGO treasure chest, full of pieces spanning art, science, psychology, design, philosophy, history, politics, anthropology, and more; pieces that enrich our mental pool of resources and empower combinatorial ideas that are stronger, smarter, richer, deeper and more impactful. Above all, it’s about how these different disciplines illuminate one another to glean some insight, directly or indirectly, into that grand question of how to live, and how to live well.”
Every week I get lost in all the wonderful things she brings me. They do jump all over the place, and after seven years of bringing a wealth of “interestingness”, she cross links everything so that you can follow all sorts of threads. Before you know it, you have a dozen tabs open in your browser and two hours have gone by. Here are some of my favorites:
I’m not the only one in love with the site. Brain Pickings was included in the US Library of Congress permanent web archive in 2012. Her newsletter has over 150,000 subscribers, with over 482,000 twitter followers. Why don’t you check it out and have a little mental excursion!
